If you work for a living, it’s virtually guaranteed that you’ve experienced #WorkRage or lost your temper at work. In this week’s episode of my Just Saying podcast, How to Handle #WorkRage, I discuss how to handle anger at work in a way that will elevate you, not undermine you.

Certain people and situations that trigger angry feelings are a part of life. Missed deadlines, dropped balls, and effort that goes unrecognized tend to bring out the worst in people.

A Rant Can Ruin Your Reputation

Many times, anger and frustration leads to over-communication, and a rant can ruin your reputation. If you must take someone to the woodshed, do it respectfully, in a private setting. When you blow up in a meeting or another public place, you run the risk of being seen as a loose cannon who cannot control yourself or manage your team.

Here are three tips for reacting more effectively:

  1. Take a time out. Step away from the situation for a few minutes, give yourself time to be angry, and separate yourself from the passion. You’ll be glad you did.
  2. Say what you have to say, and then just STOP TALKING. Do not verbalize the problem or its cause over and over.
  3. If you’re giving someone harsh feedback, stop and ask them if they know or understand WHY you are angry.
